Before you buy an eSIM, two things need to be true: your phone needs eSIM hardware, and it needs to be unlocked from your home carrier. Here is the full breakdown for iPhone and Android, plus how to check either one in under a minute.
iPhone
iPhone XS, XR, and every model released since support eSIM. If your iPhone was bought outside the United States, it is typically already unlocked. To confirm eSIM support and unlock status, go to Settings → General → About and look for an EID number, or check whether Settings → Mobile Data offers an "Add eSIM" option.
Android
Most Android flagships released from 2020 onward support eSIM, including recent Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy models, along with select others. Support varies more by model and region than on iPhone, so check Settings → Network & Internet → SIMs for an "Add eSIM" or "Download a SIM instead" option, or search your exact model name plus "eSIM support."
